About the breed: Doodles are puppies born from a Labrador retriever mother or Golden Labrador retriever mother and a Standard Poodle father. The puppies exhibit genetic characteristics of both breeds. Standard Poodles are extremely intelligent, easy-going and lovable. They love water and are excellent retrievers. The Labrador and Golden retrievers are well known for their athletic ability and superior training acceptance. The combination of Labrador or Golden retriever and Standard Poodle results in an outstanding ability to retrieve as well as an innate desire for human companionship. The puppies are eager to please and willing to accept as much love and kindness as a family can offer.
We are a very small veterinarian/family owned kennel in rural Georgia. We currently have Sandie a Golden Retriever, Chloe a chocolate Labrador retriever and Benny a chocolate Standard Poodle. These are the parents of the Labradoodles and Goldendoodles. Our other pets include two Australian Shepherds, and a very spoiled cat! The dogs have 15 acres and a lake for running, playing, and swimming. They find the geese particularly intriguing.
What do the puppies look like?
The puppies available are either Golden or Cafe au Lait colored. The coat is not a curly as a poodle, but is somewhat curlier than a Labrador. They shed less than a Labrador or Golden retriever – some owners report that the dogs don’t shed.
How big will they get?
It is always difficult to predict the adult size and weight of a newborn of any species and size cannot be guaranteed. Typically the Labradoodles and Goldendoodles finish growing as they reach 48-65 pounds. Height and length vary, but do not usually exceed 2 feet high at the shoulder and 4 feet long (nose to rump).
Are they good dogs for children?
Labrador and Golden Retrievers have been known for many years as exceptional playmates and pillows for children and their families. Poodles are very easy to train without disrupting the life of a busy family. They can also boast of having probably the best attention span in the canine world. Labradoodles exhibit the qualities of both breeds resulting in dogs that respond well to children, easily learning “fetch” and “chase” games. The puppies love to romp and play in the grass as well as retrieving in the water. Neither breed has a history of aggression. With proper training, they are fabulous dogs that quickly become valued members of the family.
